Jury Awards $25 Million to Shipyard Worker Exposed to Asbestos in Exxon Ship Repairs

A Virginia circuit court jury has awarded nearly $25 million to a former Newport News Shipyard worker afflicted with mesothelioma, finding ExxonMobil liable for his exposure to asbestos during work on its ships dating back to 1956 (Minton v. ExxonMobil Corp.).

In the March 17 verdict, the jury awarded Rubert Minton $12 million in compensatory damages, $430,963 in medical expenses, and $12.5 million in punitive damages.

The parties agreed that Minton was employed by the shipyard and that he was exposed to asbestos while servicing ships owned by several companies.
