Judge Backs Jury Verdict in Ex-Police Officer’s Race Bias Case

A Maryland federal judge affirmed a jury verdict that partially favored a former Black police officer who alleged he faced retaliation after he objected to his supervisor’s discriminatory, stereotype-driven remarks about African men.

Chief Magistrate Judge Timothy J. Sullivan of the US District Court for the District of Maryland on Tuesday denied the county’s motions for judgment or new trial, but entered a final judgment against the county that reduced the jury’s damages from $2.35 million to $300,000 under the statutory cap on damages.
