Journalists Turning to Union Protection in Turbulent Times

Journalists in both traditional print media and digital-first companies are looking to bolster themselves against industry tumult by turning to union protection.

“There is an awareness that the media industry is under pressure, both in terms of the internal economics, and the political pressures, in terms of anti-journalist statements that are coming from the White House,” NewsGuild Administrative Director Tim Schick told Bloomberg Law.

Outside pressures have drawn newsrooms together, and to unionization, he said. Journalists also are looking for higher pay, stability, and freedom from noncompete agreements.
