Jani-King to Pay $3.7M to Settle Claims It Misclassified Workers

Jani-King International will pay $3.7 million to settle a long-running class action alleging it misclassified workers as independent contractors.

The U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania granted preliminary approval of the settlement between Jani-King and 290 class members.

The class members performed cleaning services in Pennsylvania under Jani-King’s janitorial franchise system.

They filed suit in 2009, alleging that Jani-King classified them as independent contractors as opposed to employees, which allowed the company to take improper deductions from their wages in violation of Pennsylvania’s Wage Payment and Collection Law.
