Doug O’Donnell, IRS acting commissioner and a longtime official there, is retiring from the agency, the IRS announced Tuesday afternoon.

After nearly four decades of service at the agency, O’Donnell’s last day will be Feb. 28—a departure that comes in the middle of tax filing season. Melanie Krause, IRS chief operating officer, will succeed O’Donnell as acting commissioner, according to the announcement.
