Illinois is set to further restrict employers’ ability to fire immigrant workers over mismatches in their identity and work authorization documents, increasing penalties and giving interested parties such as labor unions the power to sue businesses for violations.
The bill (SB 2339) heading to Gov. JB Pritzker (D) for his signature would add to the state’s Right to Privacy in the Workplace Act, following a previous expansion of the law that took effect Jan. 1. The Democrat-sponsored bill got final legislative approval late Thursday with a Senate vote of 37-20.
