House members March 27 approved a bill to erase paycheck disparities between employees who do the same work.
The Democrat-supported legislation, known as the Paycheck Fairness Act, was largely opposed by GOP members who believed the act empowers trial lawyers and doesn’t offer novel worker protections. The measure passed on a vote of 242 to 187.
The bill would amend the Fair Labor Standards Act to prohibit employers from paying different amounts to individuals in similarly situated job titles, unless warranted by “bona fide job-related factors” that are “consistent with business necessity.”
