House Oversight Republicans to Probe Federal-Worker Settlements

May 11, 2026, 6:02 PM UTC

Republicans on the House Oversight Committee said they would investigate a surge in government payouts to settle disputes with employees.

In a statement, Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) said the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission paid out $202 million in settlements in 2023. The Merit Systems Protection Board paid out $11 million under Biden compared to $3.6 million in the first Trump administration, he said.

“While payouts are intended to resolve cases brought before administrative bodies tasked with handling federal employment, labor, and personnel disputes, available evidence raises several areas of concern,” Comer said in a letterto the Office of Personnel Management on Monday.
