High School Coach Argues Post-Game Prayers ‘Private’ on Appeal

A Washington state school district violated the free speech rights of a high school football coach when it disciplined him for refusing to stop praying at the 50-yard line after games, his attorney said at a Ninth Circuit oral argument Monday.

But the judges expressed skepticism that the coach was truly engaged in a personal, private religious observance given the public statements he made surrounding the controversy, which may have encouraged players and members of the crowd to start joining him.
