Nearly all direct-care staff at the typical U.S. nursing home left their jobs in 2017 and in 2018, according to a study published Monday in Health Affairs journal that analyzed data from more than 15,600 facilities.
The “astoundingly high” 94% turnover rate, which is much larger than previous research has shown, has likely worsened during the pandemic and appears to be a strong predictor of poor quality care, said the study’s lead author, Ashvin Gandhi, an economist and assistant professor at the UCLA Anderson School of Management.
