High Court Declines Walgreens Religious Accommodation Case (1)

The U.S. Supreme Court declined to consider a workplace dispute between Walgreen Co. and the Seventh-day Adventist Church over the pharmacy chain’s efforts to accommodate an employee’s religious practice.

The justices let stand a U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit ruling that Walgreens made a reasonable attempt to meet Darrell Patterson’s needs under the requirements of federal law.

The church represents Patterson, a Walgreens training instructor who was fired for failing to conduct a two-hour session on the Sabbath, which stretches from sundown on Friday to sundown on Saturday for Seventh-day Adventists. Walgreens allowed Patterson to swap shifts ...
