Handy Accused of Misclassifying California Cleaners, Repairmen

Gig company Handy Technologies Inc. is unlawfully classifying household cleaners and handymen as independent contractors instead of employees, according to a lawsuit the San Francisco and Los Angeles district attorneys filed Wednesday.

The complaint filed in San Francisco Superior Court alleges that New York-based Handy is violating California labor law and the state’s unfair competition law in labeling workers as contractors. The national on-demand cleaning and household repair gig service also requires workers to pay for their own cleaning supplies and sign arbitration agreements, which San Francisco DA Chesa Boudin said further erodes their rights.
