The Broadway hit “Hadestown” and a Black chorus member who lost her role to a White actor reached a deal resolving her retaliation claims after a judge rejected race bias allegations on First Amendment grounds.
The former chorus member claimed Hadestown Broadway LLC, the company that produces and stages the Greek myth-based musical, removed her from what was an all-Black chorus to avoid portraying a “White savior” narrative. The show has a constitutional right to make creative decisions on casting, the US District Court for the Southern District of New York said when it dismissed the bias claims last month. ...
