GOP Bill Would Recover Millions Wrongly Paid to Mega Pension (1)

Key congressional Republicans introduced a bill Tuesday that would force the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation to recover overpayments to pension funds that received an American Rescue Plan Act bailout after the agency failed to detect dead participants when handing out cash to one of the nation’s largest union-backed pensions.

The GHOST Act, introduced Tuesday, requires the PBGC to recoup from multiemployer plans any funds misappropriated due to miscalculations. It would also mandate that the agency cross-check—for past and future bailout applications—plan participation lists against the Social Security Administration’s Full Death Master File, which provides a more accurate database of ...
