Glassmaker Fuyao May Be China-U.S. Model Despite Labor Hurdles

Chinese-owned Fuyao Glass America Inc., a company that has struggled with labor and safety violations, rang in its fifth year of operation by pledging to inject another $46 million into the Dayton, Ohio, economy and adding 100 more workers to its 2,300-person payroll.

On hand at the Jan. 6 announcement were Chinese and Ohio officials who said the company’s nearly $600 million in foreign direct investment since 2014 demonstrates that Chinese companies can adapt to the American regulatory system and become profitable in the U.S. manufacturing sector.
