Gig Worker, Overtime Rules Are Republican Lawmakers’ Next Target

House Republicans are planning to introduce a measure to block a recent US Department of Labor regulation that makes it harder for businesses to classify workers as independent contractors rather than employees.

Rep. Kevin Kiley (R-Calif.), chairman of the House Education and the Workforce Subcommittee on Workforce Protections, said at a hearing Wednesday that he will introduce a Congressional Review Act resolution to overturn the DOL’s independent contractor rule.

The regulation, released in January, has faced stiff opposition from businesses in the gig economy as well as Republicans on the Hill.
