The oil and gas drilling industry faces an approaching federal deadline to protect workers from inhaling toxic silica dust, a common byproduct of fracking sand.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has set June 23 as the date drilling companies must comply with OSHA’s silica standard. Employers have had more than five years to prepare—the standard was released in March 2016.
The agency doesn’t anticipate extending the compliance deadline, it said in a written response to questions from Bloomberg Law.
