Fire at UAW Headquarters Forces a Delay in GM Lawsuit

A fire at the United Auto Workers’ Detroit headquarters last week is forcing the union to hit the brakes in an ongoing legal battle against General Motors Co.

The UAW sued GM in January alleging the company breached its collective bargaining agreement when it extended the employment of temporary workers without the union’s permission. The use of temporary employees is preventing GM from hiring recently laid off workers, the union said in its complaint.

But now union lawyers in the case find themselves without access to many of their paper records after a fire tore through the third floor ...
