About 31 percent of nonpostal federal employees in the workforce as of September 2012 will be eligible to retire by September 2017, compared with about 14 percent who were eligible at the end of fiscal year 2012, the Government Accountability Office said in a report issued Jan. 29.
The GAO found that out of the 1.96 million permanent career federal employees in September 2012, nearly 270,000 (14 percent) were eligible to retire. By September 2017, the report said, nearly 600,000 (about 31 percent) of those employees will be eligible.
