A fatal trench collapse in Fort Wayne, Ind., has led state workplace safety regulators to propose a $191,398 fine against contractor Land Construction Corp. in nearby Laotto.
The Indiana Department of Labor opened its investigation after the March 17 death of a worker who was buried when the walls of a 24-foot-deep trench collapsed. Crews had been working on a city water main.
It took the city fire department and utility workers several hours to recover the 50-year-old victim, according to local news reports.
A spokesperson for Land Construction said Friday the company is appealing the fine.
