The National Labor Relations Board voided a partial settlement between Exxon Mobil Corp. and the United Steelworkers in a case that has the potential to overhaul board precedent on employers’ ability to hire temporary replacement workers during lockouts.

The NLRB on Wednesday granted General Counsel Jennifer Abruzzo’s request to reject the Exxon-Steelworkers deal aimed at resolving allegations that the company violated federal labor law by threatening workers that collective bargaining was futile and making unilateral changes to job terms.
