Ex-Verizon Employee Must Turn Over Tax Returns in Race Bias Suit

Verizon Wireless can review the tax returns of a former employee suing for alleged race discrimination and retaliation because the information is relevant to the company’s defenses and requiring her to produce it is proportional to the needs of the case, the District of Utah ruled.

The court rejected the “heightened” test Tracie King proposed for determining whether to grant a motion to compel by Cellco Partnership, which does business as Verizon Wireless. King said that a two-pronged standard was proper given the confidential nature of Verizon’s request.
