Gwendolyn Young Reams will serve as the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission’s acting general counsel, the agency announced Friday.

  • Reams, a longtime EEOC attorney, most recently served as the civil rights agency’s associate general counsel for litigation management services. She was hired as an EEOC attorney in 1972, according to an agency statement.
  • The Biden administration fired Trump-appointed general counsel Sharon Gustafson on March 5. The Republican lawyer alleges partisan politics motivated her termination.
  • President Joe Biden’s decision to fire Gustafson has triggered questions about the White House’s authority to do so, as well as the long-term role of the agency’s top lawyer.
