Duke University secured final approval for a $2.35 million class settlement resolving litigation by retirees who say their pension benefits were shortchanged because the school used flawed calculations.
The agreement represents about 17% of the case’s estimated damages and is slated to provide an average boost of $14 to the monthly payments of more than 700 retirees and beneficiaries. Judge Catherine C. Eagles of the US District Court for the Middle District of North Carolina granted final approval to the deal Monday, saying she’d address class counsel’s request for attorneys’ fees in a separate order.
