DOL Tightens English Language Rules for Foreign Driver Hiring

Applications to the Department of Labor for approval of foreign truck driver positions must meet English language proficiency standards, the agency said in new guidance to employers.

That guidance from the DOL’s Office of Foreign Labor Certification is the latest measure by the Trump administration to tighten rules involving foreign workers in commercial driver positions.

The Department of Transportation issued regulations in February restricting non-domiciled commercial drivers licenses to certain employment-based visa categories, blocking eligibility for about 200,000 current drivers. The State Department last year also temporarily froze visas for commercial truck drivers.
