Disney Unclaimed Payment Case Tossed Due to Blown State Deadline

The Walt Disney Co.'s delay in coughing up financial records isn’t sufficient reason for the Michigan Treasurer to blow past the state’s deadline to seek unclaimed payments from the company, the Michigan Court of Appeals ruled.

A pair of decisions issued by the court Thursday could provide relief for companies facing long-term examinations from the state over unmade payments to Michigan contractors. Lawyers might be able to leverage the decisions in cases in other states with laws that use the same, or similar, language to Michigan’s version of the Uniform Unclaimed Property Act.
