Discriminatory Pay Practices Barred by New York Lawmakers

The New York legislature passed a bill requiring employers to give workers equal pay for similar work and barring them from paying less based on age, race, gender, or other protected status.

The bill (S5248B/A8093), which would expand state protections against wage discrimination, was part of a social justice legislative agenda put out by Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo (D) in January. Passed by the state Assembly June 20, three days after state Senate approval, it expands on equal pay legislation enacted by New York in 2015.
