DHS Sends Asylum Seeker Work Permit Rule for White House Review

A proposed rule adding new scrutiny to asylum seekers’ applications for employment authorization is undergoing White House review.

The Department of Homeland Security sent the rule (RIN: 1615-AC97) to the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs Tuesday.

According to the agency’s most recent regulatory agenda, the proposed rule will look to boost efficiency and deter fraud or frivolous asylum applications filed for the purpose of getting work permits.

Under the first Trump administration, DHS sought to impose a year-long wait for seeking a work permit after filing an asylum claim, among other new restrictions on those immigrants. ...
