About 6,700 Syrian nationals living in the U.S. will be allowed to renew their temporary protected status for an additional 18 months, the Department of Homeland Security said.
Extending TPS until Sept. 30, 2022, “is warranted because the ongoing armed conflict and extraordinary and temporary conditions supporting Syria’s TPS designation remain,” the department said in a statement on Thursday. The agency also cited the “severe” humanitarian crisis, including “deliberate targeting of civilians, the use of chemical weapons and irregular warfare tactics, and forced conscription and use of child soldiers.”
