The Department of Homeland Security signaled Monday that it may offer permanent options for remote verification of worker eligibility forms.
The agency waived in-person inspection of the Form I-9 in response to the Covid-19 pandemic in March 2020 for workplaces operating remotely. Instead of in-person inspection of documents, employers were allowed to use options like video, fax, or email.
Since then, DHS has extended remote verification options for the forms multiple times. The agency most recently said in August that the flexibility for employers would run through the end of the year.
