Death of Temporary Worker on First Day Prompts $33,250 Fine; Michaels Hails Action

The death of a worker earlier this year, which ultimately resulted in citations for two companies, highlights the need to improve safety for temporary workers, David Michaels, head of the Labor Department’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration, told BNA in a July 16 statement.

In the Jan. 22 incident, a contract worker died on his first day on the job. South Carolina’s Office of Occupational Safety and Health issued citations against Resolute Forest Products’s paper mill in Catawba, S.C., and Industrial Piping Inc. of Pineville, N.C., the state agency announced July 16.
