Damage to Irrigation System Suspected In Deaths of Two Teens in Illinois Cornfield

The deaths of two 14-year-old girls working in an Illinois cornfield July 25 may have been the result of a damaged electric-powered irrigation system that allowed electricity to flow through the water-soaked soil where the girls were working, according to a lawsuit filed by the father of one victim (Kendall v. Monsanto).

The girls—Hannah Kendall and Jade Garza, both from Sterling, Ill.—were among 72 people working in the cornfield to remove tassels from the tops of the corn stalks, a common summer job for teenagers in the Midwest to control pollination of corn plants.
