Court Battle Reignites Over Protected Status for Some Migrants

Negotiations between the Biden administration and immigrant advocates over the fate of Temporary Protected Status for migrants from a handful of countries have broken down, a court mediator said.

The advocates are seeking to maintain TPS designations for some 300,000 nationals of El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Nepal, which the Trump administration sought to terminate in 2018. The program allows foreign nationals already in the US to apply for removal protections and work permits when armed conflicts or natural disasters make it impossible to safely return to their home countries.
