Construction Crane Industry Challenges OSHA Interpretations of Crane Standard

Officials of the construction crane industry are challenging how the Labor Department’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration is interpreting training and certification requirements in the standard for cranes and derricks in construction (29 C.F.R. § 1926 Subpart CC) issued in 2010.

The issues include whether operator certifications must be based on the load capacity of the crane, whether load certifications can be accomplished as part of written tests, and whether all operators must be recertified before the new certification requirements take effect Nov. 14, 2014.
