A Connecticut union official pleaded guilty to embezzlement for stealing over $37,000 from a communications workers union.
Thomas Popillo of Newington, pleaded guilty Aug. 7 in the U.S. District Court for the District of Connecticut to one count of embezzlement and theft of labor union funds. The thefts occurred while he led the Communications Workers of America, Local 81266, also based in Newington.
Popillo stole $37,568.68 in union funds while he was the president of CWA Local 81266 from 2003 through 2017, and as secretary-treasurer from about 2003 until 2015, according to his plea agreement. Popillo embezzled the union...
