New York utility giant Con Edison agreed to pay $800,000 to resolve allegations by the U.S. government that it illegally turned away job applicants because of their disabilities.
The company’s alleged bias also violated the rights of some existing employees, who saw their pay reduced due to improper medical restrictions imposed by ConEd doctors, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission alleged in a September lawsuit. Those workers, as well as one who was fired because of improper medical concerns, will also share in the settlement, the agency said Nov. 8 in announcing the pact.
