Social Media Collection for Immigrants Gets New Comment Period

US Citizenship and Immigration Services will open a new 30-day public-comment period on social media disclosure requirements for immigration benefits.

The agency first announced plans in March to collect social media identifiers from applicants for citizenship, permanent residency, asylum, and other benefits.

It’s adopting the requirement to implement President Donald Trump’s executive order on protecting the US from terrorism and national security threats. The January directive called for measures to vet immigrants and foreign nationals to the “maximum degree possible.”
