More than 3,000 Columbia University student workers went on strike this week, mired in contract negotiations with administrators and revitalized by a victory for unions at the federal labor board.
Graduate Workers of Columbia University, part of United Auto Workers Local 2110, is at odds with administrators over pay, benefits, and a non-discrimination policy, among other issues. The strike marks an escalation of one of the most visible college organizing campaigns in the country, which resulted in the National Labor Relations Board in 2016 granting student workers at private universities the right to unionize.
