Colorado Shows States May Push Paid Leave to Fight Coronavirus

States could use rulemaking as well as legislation to take the lead on requiring paid sick leave and job protections for workers affected by the coronavirus, as Colorado’s labor department demonstrated in announcing a paid leave mandate on Wednesday.

Under the rule, Colorado will temporarily require paid sick leave up to four days for workers in specific industries while they await coronavirus test results. The emergency rule is in effect for 30 days, unless Gov. Jared Polis (D) extends the state of emergency that he declared Tuesday.
