Charter Technicians Strike Over Discipline, Use of Subcontractors

Numerous actions by a Charter Communications Inc. subsidiary prompted its employees to go on strike in New York and New Jersey, the union representing the workers said.

Some 1,800 internet and cable service technicians walked off their jobs March 28 because Spectrum-Time Warner Cable, the subsidiary, has been unfairly disciplining technicians over repeat customer service calls about “unobtainable Wi-Fi internet speeds,” the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers said in a statement.

The company is “forcing technicians to install refurbished equipment not capable of maintaining internet speeds,” IBEW Local 3 alleged in a statement sent to Bloomberg BNA March 29. The ...
