A Georgia federal district court denied in part the Roman Catholic Diocese of Savannah’s motion to dismiss race discrimination and retaliation claims under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act and 42 U.S.C. § 1981 brought by a Black, non-Catholic first-grade teacher whose contract wasn’t renewed, finding that the ministerial exception didn’t bar these claims at the pleading stage because the teacher plausibly alleged she didn’t perform ministerial functions despite her position being formally designated as ministerial.
