Carveouts to Gig Economy Law Signed by California Governor

California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) signed a bill (A.B. 2257) Friday to exempt freelance writers, musicians, and dozens of other gig workers from the worker classification law known as Assembly Bill 5.

  • The law “represents a comprehensive framework for employment law that makes for a clear distinction between employer-employee relationships and professionals that run their own independent businesses,” bill author Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez (D) said in a statement.
  • Freelance writers, photographers, musicians, insurance underwriters, and competition judges are among the dozens of so-called gig economy professionals that can work without being classified as employees under the measure.
