Uber Drivers Sue in Wake of New California Labor Law (Corrected)

Uber Technologies drivers in California sued the company for widespread wage violations, in the wake of a nearly minted state law they say is specifically designed to end the ride-hailing giant’s practice of classifying the drivers as independent contractors rather than employees.

The California legislature had the ride-sharing service in mind when it adopted Assembly Bill 5, known as A.B. 5, to stop gig-economy companies from classifying their workers as contractors, the drivers say in their lawsuit filed Sept. 11 in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California.
