California Renews Virus Injury Benefits for Front-Line Workers

Essential workers in California who contract Covid-19 and file a worker’s compensation claim will continue to be afforded a presumption that the infection happened on the job, under a new law Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) signed Thursday.

Police officers, firefighters, and certain health-care employees have until Jan. 1, 2023, to apply for workplace injury benefits under the measure (S.B. 1159). The law extends Newsom’s May executive order that expired in July.
