California Lawmakers Approve Bill Curbing Anti-Union Meetings

Employers in California couldn’t require workers to attend anti-union meetings, under legislation approved by a state Assembly Committee Wednesday.

The bill (SB 399) would prohibit employers from taking any action against an employee who declines to attend a meeting concerning religious or political matters, which would include “the decision to join or support any political party or political or labor organization.”

The proposal comes as lawmakers in several states seek to end a tactic commonly used by employers during organizing campaigns, which labor unions argue undermine their efforts and coerces workers. But business groups opposed to the measure ...
