California Governor Signs Family and Medical Leave Law Expansion

Nearly all California employers will be required to provide workers with up to 12 weeks of unpaid protected family care and medical leave starting in January.

Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) signed a bill (S.B. 1383) Thursday to allow workers the time off to care for a domestic partner, grandparent, grandchild, sibling, or parent-in-law with a serious health condition. The California Family Rights Act already allowed workers to take leave to bond with a newborn or tend to a sick child, spouse, parent, or themselves.
