California AI Hiring Proposal Too Broad, Business Groups Say

Worker advocates urged the California Civil Rights Department on Thursday to add in more protections to the state’s employment discrimination rules for the use of artificial intelligence, such as providing notices to job applicants when the technology is used to screen candidates.

Meanwhile, business groups said the department’s proposed rules were too broad as its council members finished taking public input. The rules would adapt — not change — existing hiring discrimination law to artificial intelligence and other automated tools. Council members will consider the public comment when deciding whether to change its draft.
