Brewer Illegally Put Union President on Leave, Labor Board Says

A Puerto Rican brewery violated federal labor law by placing the president of its workers’ union on six months of unpaid leave, the National Labor Relations Board ruled.

The NLRB on Tuesday affirmed an administrative law judge’s 2023 decision that rejected Compañía Cervecera de Puerto Rico Inc.’s assertion that the company had the power to unilaterally impose such prolonged leave under its collective bargaining agreement.

The ALJ correctly found that the company was motivated by anti-union hostility when it assigned the union president unpaid leave, the board said.
