Employees at the Chicago-based biotech firm Tempus have formed what is perhaps the largest union of workers at an artificial intelligence-driven company in the US.
Workers voted overwhelmingly Thursday to join the International Association of Machinists, forming a union of around 400 Tempus employees, according to the National Labor Relations Board.
The win advances organized labor’s efforts to make inroads into specialized white-collar fields and adds a dimension of worker leverage in the fraught debate over AI.
In a statement from the union, workers said they seek stronger safety standards, better parameters for work-life balance, and higher wages.
