Bill to Study Immigrants’ Employment Barriers Clears Congress

Congress passed legislation directing the Labor Department to examine obstacles for skilled immigrants to secure employment in the US.

The Bridging the Gap for New Americans Act (S. 3157), which would require an analysis comparing immigrants’ employment in the US and their countries of origin, passed the House by a 363-52 vote Monday after clearing the Senate through the same expedited procedure in June.

Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) introduced the measure last year. Rep. John Katko (R-N.Y.) introduced similar legislation in the House.
